Fuel Consumption
Hi guys, what is your car's fuel consumption figures?
My 1.6 HB is currently returning figures of 8.8L/100km. No where near the 5.9L/100km as quoted by Ford. However, it is well known that real life situation rarely achieves fuel consumption figures that are quoted officially. So feel free to share what is your car's current fuel consumption and how many ppl you normally ferry in your car...

Re: Fuel Consumption
Alternate link to above table if you can't view it via imageshack: CLICK
Point to note:
- Shell 97 was my first refuel after getting the car
- Esso 95 is a mix of highway driving from home to work, home to Kuantan and back for a family trip (total 4 ppl in the car) using NKVE, DUKE and the East Cost Expressway (theoretically should be excluded from this table but that will be after I get normal working day travel readings)
- 1 BHP 95 and 1 Shell 95 sample have been excluded from this table as they skewed the readings due to not topping up full tank
- My total distance traveled on the trip meter is has just gone past 5000+ km
Normal working day drive is only me using the following roads:
- To work: ELITE Highway - NKVE @ Bkt Raja Toll
From work: Federal Highway - ELITE Highway via Ebor Utara Toll @ Putra Heights Toll or LKSE exiting at Hicom Industrial area.
Interesting Observation(s):
Started off trip to Kuantan with 3/4 tank and reached there with only 1/2 tank. Trip started at 7:30am and ended at 11am. Driving speed varies from 110 kph to 140kph depending on straightness of highway. Did a lot of coasting on the downhill mountain roads (i.e. let gravity move the car and feet off the accelerator).

wow...you really did a good observation there!!! anyways, I only use RON95 Shell for now. Don't really worry so much about the fuel consumption but in the spirit of discussion, my meter always show 8.8 or 8.7 l/100km. Not sure how accurate this is, but for my other ride, I can change the meter reading to be km/l which is more accurate. Any bros here know whether we can change our setting to km/l??

Re: Fuel Consumption
Manual calculation will always be more accurate as your numbers will be based on what has actually taken place (i.e. distance already traveled and how much you have refueled). Meter reading is only based on estimate based on current driving conditions over a short period of time.
The table is only one part of a larger spreadsheet that I made. It pretty much serves two purposes for me:
In terms of pickup power, I find that Esso 95 > BHP 95. This is based on my climb up a gentle slope near Giants Putra Heights, which I need to get through each morning to get to work.
The table is only one part of a larger spreadsheet that I made. It pretty much serves two purposes for me:
- You know how people are always comparing which fuel brand gives the better mileage or which has better power or a balance between the two? Well, I am trying to come up with my own statistical conclusion. I have just finished my BHP brand run (6 refuels with 1 exclusion) and am now on Esso (the 2 refuels in the table will be excluded later as it is not part of my normal driving routine). This is going to be a small project for me spanning more than a year.
- It is a statistical game to see how efficient I drive by comparing my current FC against my previous refuel FC. Indirectly, it also helps shape my driving habits towards fuel efficiency (i.e. hypermiling habits...the safer ones, that is).

my lowest yet was 6.3l/100km on shell R95 on 50% highway. now mileage is over 5k.
Dias ur conclusion Esso R95 is better than BHP? how bout comparisson wit caltex? thanks dias.

Re: Fuel Consumption
I need to get 5 normal routine drive readings first before moving to the next brand. I'm currently on Esso but since the two Esso samples in the table above will be excluded later (due to being a highway vacation drive and not routine daily drive), that means another 5 routine daily drive samples to record before moving on to a different brand. On average, I refill my tank every 11 to 12 calendar days (or 8 - 9 working days). That makes it around 2.5 - 3 more months on Esso before switching.
It is still too early to say Esso > BHP overall since there is not enough statistical evidence to back it up. Power-wise, Esso do feel better than BHP on an uphill climb.
Haven't tried Caltex yet because there isn't any nearby my home. The ones nearest to where I live are Shell Putra Heights (3 km), Esso Putra Heights (1.7 km), BHP Tmn Alam Megah (somewhere between 4 - 5 km) and Petronas Tmn Alam Megah (never checked the distance but should be roughly around 3+ km).
The only viable station for me to fuel up on Caltex will be the one along the ELITE highway, near the USJ Toll. That means making a pit stop on my way home but that would exclude possibility of refueling on weekends. The next nearest would be the one opposite Sri Melur restaurant at USJ but that is like around 20 to 30 minutes drive away. If only the Caltex station at Tmn Alam Megah is open (noticed that it has been closed for a very long time), then that'd be great.

Running on R97 Esso, I have about the same rate as you. 6.5/100km. Normal driving condition.
One time i did achieved the advertised 5.9/100km. But i was very gentle with the throttle.
The best rate i experienced so far is 6.9-7.1L/100km @ 140km/h.

Re: Fuel Consumption
Bro Dias, I couldn't see your table there. But I'm a regular for Esso 95. Somehow just feel that it's smoother and and more powerful as you said. As for BHP, just don't feel that their fuel lives up to their claim of having 2X additives. But feelings are very subjective, so hope I don't offend BHP dealer if any.

Re: Fuel Consumption
Depends on where you drive and how you drive. No two individuals can get the same exact FC unless both drive along the same route, have the same driving habit and going through the same traffic condition. Close enough maybe, but criterias need to be met.foxdie5 wrote:Mine with BHP95 best achieved was only 7.5L/100km

Re: Fuel Consumption
sorry, its not that i'm jealous because i dont have the FC meter, but i believe the FC reading effective only in that short point of time, not the overall driving style.
its hard to measure it accurately. well, lets test 1 by 1.
full 42liters result.

Fuel Consumption Spreadsheet: GOOGLE DOC DOWNLOAD LINK
Just update the "REFUEL" worksheet and let the formulas on the other worksheets do the rest. DISTANCE worksheet will only show data once you key in data of your second refill.

Notes on "REFUEL" worksheet.
- Headers highlighted in yellow are columns that require user input.
- Key in the amount of fuel purchased and also the kilometers stated on the tripmeter at time of refuel (use notebook + pencil/ipod/iphone). Remember to reset the tripmeter after refueling in preparation for your next refuel.
- Pricing is set at RM 1.90 (RON 95) and RM 2.40 (RON 97). If there's a price revision, just amend the formula on column H (Cost per Liter). Just look for the corresponding values in the formula set.
- Column D is a drop down menu for petrol brand
Notes on "DISTANCE" worksheet.
- EXCEPTIONS (Column L) is for data that you want to be excluded from your calculation due to exceptional circumstances. It's a dropdown menu with conditional formatting.

Re: Fuel Consumption
The spreadsheet is to be downloaded and not opened directly from Google Docs.
This is first time I'm using Google Docs to upload and host a spreadsheet, so there's still settings and stuff which I need to familiarize with.
Anyway, I have changed the SHARED SETTINGS to "Anyone with the link able to view". There should be a download link at the top left. Maybe also try logging into your Google account if still not able to do so.
